Fox News actually acknowledged that climate change is real

dunlap-2016-climate-human-activities

or the past decade, Fox News has been a haven for climate change denialism, shielding viewers from the evidence that humans are causing global temperatures to rise. Perhaps no other news outlet has done as much to harden the view, among conservatives, that global warming is a fiction.

But on Thursday, just a few minutes before President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States would back out of a major international climate agreement, Fox did something startling and utterly off brand.

Viewers tuning in to watch the president’s speech saw anchor Shepard Smith lecturing them that climate change was not, in fact, a hoax:

Climate change is real and our activities do contribute to it.

As the New York Times reports today, scientific studies show if the world’s carbon emissions continue unchecked, atmospheric temperatures will continue to rise. The planet will not just be hotter but also suffer from rising sea levels, more powerful storms, droughts that lead to food shortages and extreme conditions.

Supporters of the accord argue it’s the right thing to do for the environment, and for people — future generations.

On the matter of climate change, Smith has been one of the few dissenting voices at Fox News. In 2014, he stirred up a minor controversy when he declared, on air: “Climate change — it is real. The science is true.”

Trump’s Paris speech Thursday fell squarely in the middle of Smith’s 3 pm show, which gave the anchor a chance to remind his conservative viewers about the scientific consensus on climate change.

Smith’s forceful acknowledgement of the science is startling only in the context of Fox News, a channel that has long been blamed for perpetuating right-wing ignorance of the science on global warming. In 2011, researchers from American, George Mason, and Yale universities found that Fox News programs overwhelmingly rejected or ignored the scientific evidence on climate change, and promoted a false sense of balance by favoring guests who denied the planet was heating up.

“Notably, Fox also provided substantially more coverage on climate change than the other two networks, thereby amplifying doubt about global warming within the cable news landscape,” the researchers write.

People who already doubt climate change are much more likely to watch Fox News, of course, but there’s evidence that Fox News, in turn, has suppressed public recognition of global warming.

Studies have shown that many climate deniers are not incorrigible, but in fact are surprisingly open to new viewpoints. A recent experiment from Yale University researchers Sander van der Linden and Anthony Leiserowitz, and George Mason’s Edward Maibach found that simply telling people “97% of climate scientists have concluded that human-caused global warming is happening” is enough to increase their confidence that climate change is real.

What’s more, both liberals and conservatives shifted their views equally after learning this fact. Even people who were avid watchers of Fox News became more receptive to the idea of man-made global warming, suggesting that at least some climate skeptics are simply misinformed, not willfully oblivious.

Part of the problem is that the American media has done a bad job of explaining climate science. According to the survey, only a quarter of liberals and only 5 percent of conservatives were aware that more than 90 percent of climate scientists believe climate change is real and that it is caused by people. The widespread “public confusion and doubt about the state of scientific agreement has limited action on global warming for decades,” the researchers argue.

As this issue becomes more and more politicized, one fear is that it will be harder to change people’s minds. Over the past 20 years, Democrats have become more confident that humans are causing global warming, while Republicans have become more skeptical. This reflects, in part, how politicians and pundits have increasingly turned climate skepticism into a matter of political identity.

LEONARDO ‘PRIVATE JET’ DICAPRIO BASHES TRUMP OVER PARIS CLIMATE PULLOUT

020617dicaprio.jpg

Yes, really.

Shortly after Trump made his announcement in the Rose Garden yesterday, DiCaprio tweeted, “Today, our planet suffered. It’s more important than ever to take action. #ParisAgreement.”

It’s unlikely that DiCaprio himself will be taking any action if that means curbing his own carbon-belching luxury celebrity lifestyle.

Last year, the Oscar winner took a round trip of 8,000 miles on a private jet from Cannes to New York and back again to collect an honor from a clean-water advocacy group.

After flying on another private jet to attend the soccer World Cup in Brazil in 2014, DiCaprio stayed on a 470-foot yacht owned by oil billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The yacht uses fuel equal to 83 American household’s annual worth of CO2 emissions.

After being entertained by the oil billionaire, DiCaprio attended a People’s Climate March in New York where he protested against – you guessed it – the oil industry.

During his Oscar winning speech, DiCaprio decried global warming as “the most urgent threat facing our entire species”.

This was after the actor had taken no less than six private jet trips from New York to LA in the space of six weeks.

He also took a private jet from L.A. to Las Vegas and stayed in Vegas for just eight hours to attend a party before flying all the way back again.

Leo was so worried about global warming that just months after his Oscar speech, he got his celebrity friends to fly 6,000 miles from LA to St Tropez so they could listen to his speech on, you guessed it, global warming.

And I’m not done.

BERNIE TURNS UP THE HEAT: Sanders demands apology over Hillary rage

“In fact, 57 oil, gas and coal industry lobbyists have directly contributed to her campaign,” Sanders said Friday night.

“With 43 of them contributing the maximum allowed for the primary. And these are not just workers in the fossil fuel industry,” Sanders said, referring to Clinton’s defense. “These are paid, registered lobbyists.

“Secretary Clinton, you owe our campaign an apology. We were telling the truth,” Sanders said to cheers.

Sanders clearly wanted to continue to focus on the moment yesterday when his rival pointed in the face of the activist and shouted at her.

Thank you for talking about climate change,” the woman off camera said in the video released by Greenpeace. She then asked the candidate if she would go back on her word and not have “fossil fuel money” in her campaign.

“I do not have — I have money from people who work for fossil fuel companies — I am so sick,” Clinton said, the smile long gone from her face.

“I am so sick of the Sanders campaign lying about me! I’m sick of it!” Clinton yelled, pointing in the woman’s face.

Greenpeace posted with the video, “At a Hillary Clinton rally at SUNY Purchase campus today, the presidential candidate lost her patience with a Greenpeace activist who thanked her for her commitment to climate change then asked her whether she’ll reject fossil fuel money moving forward. Pointing her finger at activist Eva Resnick-Day, Clinton claimed she only takes money from people who work for fossil fuel companies and called the accusations lies.”

LEONARDO DICAPRIO ATTACKS REPUBLICANS FOR DENYING GLOBAL WARMING

Speaking at “The Revenant” premiere at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo yesterday, DiCaprio stated the US needed to “do its part” in fixing climate change, and that includes voting Democrat.

“We need somebody, certainly in the most powerful country in the world, who believes in modern science, who believes imperical truths,” the actor stated. “We should not have a candidate who doesn’t believe in modern science to be leading our country. Climate change is one of the most concerning issues facing all of humanity and the United States needs to do its part.”

Although he didn’t mention Republicans by name, GOP candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz like many in the party routinely deny the left’s constant climate fears. Meanwhile, Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders make climate change a staple of their agendas.

The Titanic actor was previously criticized after using his 2016 Oscars acceptance speech to promote the climate change agenda, despite his own lavish lifestyle.

“Climate change is real,” he said at the 88th Academy Awards. “It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat affecting our species. We need to work together and stop procrastinating.”

Clinton: GOP disbelieves climate change because Koch brothers tell them to

clintonhillary_102315cl (1)

Clinton warned America’s economy would slip behind other nations if lawmakers keep debating climate change instead of acting.

“Some country is going to be the 21st Century clean energy superpower,” she said. “I think it will be China, Germany or us. I want it to be us and I hope it’s us.

“I still believe we can make things in America. We’re going to combat climate change and then we’re going to create more clean, renewable energy jobs.”

Clinton argued Republicans are so critical of her Oval Office bid because she is unyielding on clean energy and other progressive policies.
