Russia amassing troops at borders in challenge to NATO

Russia is set to establish three new military divisions — around 30,000 troops — along its borders in a direct challenge to Western allies’ troop buildup in the region.

NATO revealed last month that it would be sending around 4,000 troops to Poland and the former Soviet countries in the Baltic.

Now Moscow has hit back by announcing its own plans to expand its military presence.

“The Defense Ministry is taking a series of measures in order to counter the expansion of NATO forces in direct proximity to the Russian border,” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday on state television.

“By the end of the year two new divisions will be formed in the western military district and one in the southern military district.”

THERE IS A “SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL” FOR CLINTON OPERATIVE ALBRIGHT

albright-nato

Last Thursday marked the 17th anniversary of NATO’s illegal bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during Bill Clinton’s reign. The attack—38,400 sorties, including 10,484 strike sorties—lasted 78 days and destroyed infrastructure, commercial buildings, schools, health institutions, media houses and cultural monuments.

NATO “deeply” regretted killing at least seventeen people when a bomb hit a bus packed with women and children. It also supposedly regretted killing fifteen people after it targeted a hospital with a cluster bomb and killed three diplomats at China’s embassy in Belgrade. After Serbian television criticized Albright and Clinton, it was bombed as well, killing sixteen people.

TRUMP DECLARES “IT IS AMAZING HOW OFTEN I AM RIGHT”

120215trump9

Back in January, Trump referred to Brussels, the capital city of Belgium, as a “hell hole”, adding that it has been ruined by extremists now residing there.

The New York Times among others accused Trump of “insulting” Belgians and also of being racist.

Following the attacks on Brussels this week, Trump’s comments were once again highlighted.

Trump repeated the sentiment this week, noting that “Brussels was one of the great, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, 20 years ago. It was amazing, actually, and safe. Now, it’s an absolute horror show.”

That statement has found its way into an ISIS propaganda video, released by the pro-ISIS al-Battar Media Foundation and exchanged by ISIS supporters on social media.

Nato accuses Russia of ‘weaponising’ immigrants

epa05162072 A handout image dated 15 February 2016, provided by the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) or Doctors Without Bordersorganization, showing destruction and rubble at an MSF-supported hospital in Idlib province in northern Syria, largely destroyed in an attack on early 15 February 2016. At least eight staff members are missing after airstrikes at a hospital affiliated with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in northern Syria, believed to have been carried out by Russian jets. 'We can confirm that the MSF-supported structure in Maaret al-Noumaan in northern Idlib was destroyed this morning in airstrikes,' said Mirella Hodeib, a press offer at MSF in Beirut. MSF said 40,000 people would be cut off from access to medical services as a result of the latest strikes on the hospital in Idlib. Three MSF-supported hospitals were recently damaged in Aleppo. Nato’s top commander accused Russia and the Syrian regime on Tuesday of “weaponising” immigration by using bombs aimed at civilians to deliberately cause large flows of refugees and challenge European political resolve.

General Philip Breedlove, Nato’s supreme allied commander, said that the types of bombs being used in Syria — especially the Assad regime’s barrel bombs — were designed to force civilians from their homes.

Asked at a Senate hearing whether Russia was aggravating the Syrian refugee crisis in order to divide countries in the EU, he replied: “I can’t find any other reason for them [air strikes against civilians] other than to cause refugees to be on the move and make them someone else’s problem.” He added: “I use the term weaponisation of immigration.”

Gen Breedlove was talking as the ceasefire in Syria orchestrated by the US and Russia entered its fourth day amid significantly reduced fighting but some signs of violations on both sides.

In a report published on Monday, the Institute for the Study of War said that Russian air strikes had continued in opposition-held areas of northwestern Syria after the start of the ceasefire.

Gen Breedlove said that the recent Russian air strikes were “ostensibly” against Isis and the al-Nusra Front, which are not covered by the ceasefire, but he added that “I think that this remains to be seen”. “We will have to watch the actual activity of the cessation to determine whether it is a valid one or not,” he said.

While US and European officials have been heavily critical of the impact of the Russian and Syrian air campaign on the refugee crisis that the war has generated, Gen Breedlove’s comments were unusually blunt.

NATO commander says Syria, Russia using migrant crisis as a ‘weapon’

02032016-Breedlove

The supreme allied commander in Europe for the 28-member military alliance said the massive flow of migrants from war-torn Syria has had a destabilizing effect on European countries where they found refuge, and that worked to Moscow’s advantage.

“Together, Russia and the Assad regime are deliberately weaponizing migration in an attempt to overwhelm European structures and break European resolve,” Breedlove told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Speaking of Russia’s six-month air campaign in support of Assad, and the Syrian leader’s use of barrel bombs in civilian areas, Breedlove said Moscow and Damascus are deliberately fueling the mass displacement of Syrians.

Breedlove, who also heads the US military’s European Command, suggested this creates a distraction for Western powers as they grapple with the crisis and are forced to take their eye off its root cause.

“These indiscriminate weapons used by both Bashar al-Assad, and the non-precision use of weapons by the Russian forces, I can’t find any other reason for them other than to cause refugees to be on the move and make them someone else’s problem,” Breedlove said.

Further complicating the refugee crisis, he added, is that increasing numbers of foreigners who have fought in Syria are heading home again, bringing battlefield skills and sometimes extremist ideologies.

“What we have seen growing in the past months and year is that in that flow of refugees we see criminality, terrorism and foreign fighters,” he said.

NATO last month launched an unprecedented naval mission in the Aegean Sea to tackle people smugglers taking refugees and migrants from Turkey to Greece.

Russia responds to NATO accusations of ‘inaccurate’ bombing

TASS_Rogozin_468

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has responded to comments by General Philip Breedlove, the commander of NATO forces in Europe, after Breedlove said that Russian and Syrian forces were deliberately provoking the mass migration of Syrians.

Speaking at a press briefing on March 1, Breedlove had said the motive of such acts is to force the European authorities to deal with the crisis in their countries and to divert them from the “source of the problem.”

Breedlove also characterized the bombing by the Russian air force in Syria as “inaccurate.”

Rogozin responded to the statement on his Facebook page, reminding the alliance of several tragic incidents that have taken place in Afghanistan in recent years.

“Laying one’s own fault at someone else’s door – a specialist in bombing of Afghan weddings has accused us of ‘inaccurate bombing’,” he wrote on the social network.
